Implementing a light rail system along Cincinnati's existing highway infrastructure while redirecting trucking to I-275 holds the promise of several significant benefits for the region. Firstly, such a move could substantially reduce traffic congestion on the city's main highways, leading to smoother commutes and more efficient transportation for residents and businesses alike. Furthermore, the environmental impact could be substantial, with light rail systems generally producing fewer emissions per passenger mile compared to traditional modes of transportation like cars and trucks. This shift could contribute to improved air quality and reduced carbon emissions, aligning with broader environmental goals. Additionally, the accessibility of the region would receive a boost, as a reliable and efficient public transportation system could better serve residents, especially those without access to private vehicles. Finally, the presence of a light rail system could catalyze economic development along its route, attracting businesses and residents to locate near transit stations and fostering vibrant, transit-oriented communities.

To delve deeper into the logistics and functionality of the light rail system within Cincinnati's highway network, I've opted to examine its potential implementation along I-71. By focusing on this particular corridor, we can better understand how the integration of a light rail system would operate within existing infrastructure and traffic patterns. This approach allows us to assess factors such as station placement, alignment adjustments, and potential interactions with other modes of transportation. Additionally, studying the implementation along I-71 provides insights into how the system could serve key destinations and address the transportation needs of communities along this major artery.

Pre-Implementation

I-71 ranks among Cincinnati's busiest interstates, experiencing a consistent rise in traffic over time. Yet, amid the COVID pandemic, traffic temporarily decreased. Redirecting truck routes to the 275 loop could alleviate congestion, creating space for a proposed light rail by repurposing existing lanes on either side of the highway. Feasibility studies illustrate the potential implementation process, envisioning pedestrian bridges at stops. Utilizing existing infrastructure, such as bridges spanning the highway, could further support this initiative's expansion.
